Agriculture

The Marula Tree
|
Agriculture is one of the cornerstone of our economy. We pride ourselves
with the Marula tree that is found in abundance in the area. The fruit
is used to make traditional beer called Morula.
The Marula tree is also embraced by the municipality as its reflected on
the Municipal Coat of Arms. It represents growth as the beer brewed is
sold to people for income generation among members of the community. A
celebration is not complete without this traditional drink.
|
It has been realized that an agro-processing factory that involves fruit
juices and jams production from marula fruits, mangoes, oranges,
litchis, watermelons, peaches and bananas will have an enormous export
potential.
There is a need for an abattoir in the Blouberg area as this area
produces a large portion of beef in the province. This abattoir can
also lead to the establishment of a deboning factory, a hide tannery and
a packaging factory that can alleviate the unemployment rate in the
area.

Through the LRAD program, a total number of about 25 emerging farmers
from the Blouberg area benefited when three farms were allocated.
