Mining
|
The municipality has a history of mining that dates decades back. There is a general
perception that the area is endowed with an abundance of mineral deposits such as
coal, diamonds and marble. In Senwabarwana, on the farm Borkum 143 Ls a small gold
mine operated from 1954 to 1961. There is however some small scare potential that
exists.
On the farm Langlaagte 279 between 1940 and 1953 at Blouberg mine, lead and barite
were extracted and it is believed that the mine still has potential. There is a
possibility of a marble mine at a farm called Suez near Alldays. There is the
possibility of large coal deposits along the Mogalakwena River between Rasekhuta and
Mokhurumela, which has to be investigated as Metsico carried out a study. There is
potential for Gold Mining at Ga-Maela which is part of Tlhona.
The Municipality, through its LED Division, has commissioned a minerals resources
audit so as to ensure that the growth of rural settlements does not make the
existing potentials dormant. Service providers have been contracted to pursue minin
development in the area and great progress is been made, especially on farms such as
Driekoppies, Ga Mankgodi and Swarts.
